High Falls
Prize goes to whoever spots the waterfall in the pictures below.
Downtown Rochester, NY is home to High Falls, a 96 foot waterfall on the mighty Genesee River. With a great view of the Genesee Brewery, the falls are accompanied by frequently utilized train tracks, the Inner Loop which more represents a “C” at this point, and the Pont de Rennes Bridge. This pedestrian bridge is the most direct walking route to Genesee Cream Ale straight from the tap.
The issue being, as stated in the description, is my fear of heights. Pedestrian bridges are typically built to go over something. In this case, it is the Genesee River with glorious views of High Falls. Or so I’m told … I’ve yet to physically walk far enough out on this bridge to see the grand views of skyline meets nature. That being said, I needed to take photos of something else, something less exciting or stereotypical.
Given that my subject will not contain the largest spectacle and possibly the sole purpose of the walkway being placed where it is, I had to get creative with my photography. I’d like to say that it took more skill to come up with photos without the falls being the main feature, but that is explicitly a cop out excuse.
Excuse or not, I was very pleased with how these images turned out. They show off the features of the bridge itself and brings context in a micro sense. Turning these black and white added to the depth given how simple the compositions are. It almost feels as though these photos are retro in nature. High falls was not visible from where I stood, however, that didn’t stop me from taking interesting pictures.
